Thanks to a new MLB collective bargaining agreement, the D-backs are set to receive an extra 1st-round pick in the upcoming draft, positioned at the end of the 1st round.

The “Prospect Promotion Incentive” was put into place in order to encourage teams to scout and build talent rather than just buy.

Since the Diamondbacks did reach the World Series in 2023, they will have the 29th pick of the MLB draft, along with an additional one at the end of the 1st round.

The last time the Diamondbacks had a late 1st-round pick was in 2003, when they selected Carlos Quinten at 29th overall from Stanford University.

While being in this position again was definitely not expected, the trade-off of a lower pick for a successful postseason run is something any team would gladly accept.
