ASU football 4/17 roundup

ASU OL Danny Valenzuela Enters the Portal

Arizona State offensive lineman Danny Valenzuela put his name into the portal on Tuesday.

Valenzuela was a late transfer before last season out of junior college. He had two short stints in games against NAU and UCLA last season.

He joins Thomas Le Boucher as the two ASU offensive linemen to enter the portal. This comes after both were seemingly not going to play a big role after seeing how things unfolded in spring practices. Valenzuela is listed at 6-foot-3 and 280 pounds.

ASU LB Spencer McKelligon Enters Transfer Portal

McKelligon became the seventh Sun Devil this week to put his name in the portal on Wednesday. He is the first linebacker in the portal.

McKelligon is listed at 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds. He was a three-star prospect in the 2022 high school class out of the Portland, Oregon.

ASU Potentially a Target for TCU WR Transfer

TCU WR Jordan Hudson entered the transfer portal and ASU could reportedly be in the mix for him. He is listed at 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds.

Hudson posted shortly after on Twitter and tagged ASU wide receiver coach Ra’Shaad Samples. Samples is listed by 247 Sports as the primary recruiter for Hudson in getting him to TCU.

Hudson is now one of the best players in the portal. Hudson was a four-star prospect and rated as one of the top high school receivers in his 2022 class. He appeared in 14 games for the Horned Frogs and had 14 catches for 174 yards and three touchdowns.

Top Desert Mountain Recruits Considering ASU

ASU recently got its biggest local commitment for Dillingham from Desert Mountain’s Dylan Tapley. Now, his teammates, who are all considered top 20 prospects Arizona prospects in the 2024 class are “seriously considering ASU,” 247 Sports’ Chris Karpman reports.

Dillon Hipp is one of the other Desert Mountain players considering ASU. He is a three-star tight end listed at 6-foot-6, 240 pounds. In his two varsity seasons, Hipp has 43 receptions for 480 yards and five touchdowns.

The other player is Santana Wilson, and he would arguably surpass Tapley as the biggest recruit from the state. He is a four-star defensive back listed at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds. In his three seasons on varsity, he has totaled 41 total tackles and two interceptions.

NCAA Investigation Update

Karpman wrote a detailed report on the NCAA investigation into the ASU football program and said it is believed to have concluded.

Kenny Dillingham Named One of Top 15 College Coaches under 40 by CFB Writer

CBS’ Dennis Dodd named Dillingham, who is the youngest Power Five coach, one of the top 15 college coaches under 40 in a new story.

Here is what he said about Dillingham: “ASU had grown stale and underachieving. Oh, and don’t forget the ongoing NCAA investigation left behind by Herm Edwards. Enter Dillingham, a native son who wants to retire as Sun Devils’ coach. He has completely revamped the roster (46 new faces) and made ASU fun. Now the hard part: making ASU dangerous. Dillingham would have been on this list had he not gotten the Sun Devils’ job. Before the age of 33, he had been offensive coordinator at four FBS programs, three of them in the Power Five.”
