Before leaving in the 5th inning due to tightness in his right hamstring, Diamondbacks’ ace Zac Gallen, who boasted a 1.64 ERA entering the game, gave up three earned runs over five innings. His bumpy start contributed to the Diamondbacks’ 6-1 defeat against the Seattle Mariners.

Josh Rojas, a former member of the Diamondbacks and a valley native, made it a 1-0 game with a homer to right field on the first pitch that Gallen threw.

It was Rojas’ just 2nd home run of the season.

This homer, only Rojas’ second of the season, set the tone for a game dominated by long balls, with four home runs accounting for all the runs scored on both sides.

Mitch Garver increased the Mariners’ lead to 2-0 with a two-out homer in the 2nd inning.

The Diamondbacks’ lone run came from Kevin Newman, but their hopes were dashed when Mitch Haniger hit a grand slam off reliever Scott McGough, pushing the Mariners’ lead to 6-1.

McGough’s ERA now stands at 7.30 after 11 appearances, during which he has allowed at least one run in six.

Offensively, the Diamondbacks were stifled, managing just three hits and only four runners reaching scoring position. Their efforts were further hampered by double plays, with three occurring in the first four innings.

Corbin Carroll, following his Rookie of the Year season in 2023, went 0-3, dropping his average to .202.

Now this season, the Diamondbacks are 1-8 in series openers. They have fallen to 12-15 and the injury big refuses to go away.

Looking ahead, Arizona aims to bounce back in their next game tomorrow at 6:40 PM, with Slade Cecconi slated to start.
