McDonough’s neighbor stated, “[He] has a history of volatile behavior and also [was] publicized in national news related to a case he has with the Arizona Cardinals. He tried to strangle me unprovoked and both me and my family do not feel safe.”

A court date has been set for April 11 in Mecklenburg County, to asses Terry McDonough’s simple assault charges.

The court documents outline McDonough’s offense as simple assault, which is common between two individuals fighting in public and result in nothing more than bumps and bruises or the victim taking offense.

In this instance, simple assault is used an an umbrella term covering both assault and battery. There is a difference between the two charges, but they often overlap.  In North Carolina, assault is classified as an offense when an individual attempts or threatens to unlawfully touch someone. The key words being attempt and threaten. Battery is when an individual intentionally touches someone without their permission or consent.

In the affidavit, it claims that Terry McDonough chest-bumped his neighbor then put his hands around his neck and tried to choke him, while shouting obscenities and derogatory terms. This incident came after some tractor equipment damaged the erstwhile executive’s lawn.

Previous Grievances

McDonough dedicated many years to the Arizona Cardinals. He spent 10 seasons in the front-office and several years as the vice president of player personnel.

In April 2023, he filed an arbitration claim against the Cardinals owner, Michael Bidwill, for cheating and using burner phones to circumvent the 2018 suspension of then-GM Steve Keim. Bidwill responded by denying liability and stated that McDonough’s, “erratic behavior eventually damaged his career.”

Burn City Sports insider, Jacob Hardin, provides more details about McDonough’s accusations and Michael Bidwill’s response.
