The desert showcase has been around since the 1970s and is regarded as one of the sport’s most important bowl games. With iconic moments at State Farm Stadium and Arizona State’s Sun Devil Stadium, this year’s matchup adds another chapter to the bowl’s rich history.

This is not Miami’s first time in the Fiesta Bowl. The Hurricanes have played in the game four times, with appearances in 1985, 1987, 1994 and 2003. Despite its history in the desert, Miami has never won a Fiesta Bowl.

The Hurricanes’ record underscores a familiar reality in sports. Losses to UCLA, Penn State and Arizona came during eras when the program was among the nation’s elite. Even the 2003 double-overtime loss to Ohio State in the national championship game reflects how nothing is guaranteed, with outcomes always decided at the final whistle.

Ole Miss, on the other hand, enters the Fiesta Bowl on unfamiliar ground. The Rebels are making their first appearance in the Arizona showcase, with no previous history attached to the game.

The debut signals the program’s growth on a national level and how far it has come. For Ole Miss, the semifinal represents opportunity rather than obstacles. Although nationally ranked higher than Miami, the Rebels still have something to prove as they chase a spot in the College Football Playoff final.

The semifinal sets up a clash between history and new territory. The Fiesta Bowl has long served as a bridge between regional fan bases and the national college football spotlight. For one team, the night will be about anticipation; for the other, redemption.

Thursday’s game will determine who advances to the national championship and add another meaningful chapter to the legendary Fiesta Bowl in Arizona.
