PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns were looking to have fun with their fans on social media, but the Milwaukee Bucks reminded everyone of one of the most painful moments in franchise history.

The Suns’ official X account recently asked fans to share their favorite Suns memes, with many users providing lighthearted responses. Then the Bucks joined the conversation, responding with a meme referencing the teams’ 2021 NBA Finals matchup, which ultimately saw Milwaukee raise the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

It didn’t take long for the post to draw a reaction, with many Suns fans less than amused. Some called out the Bucks for taking an unnecessary shot, while others fired back by pointing to Milwaukee’s current trajectory in defense of Phoenix.

Others appreciated the lighthearted jab, applauding the Bucks’ social media team for its quick-witted response.

The exchange became just another chapter in one of the NBA’s lingering rivalries, showing that the emotions from the 2021 Finals haven’t faded despite five years passing.

While it ended in heartbreak, the Finals run gave Phoenix fans one of the most memorable stretches in franchise history. The Suns won the Western Conference and took a 2-0 series lead over Milwaukee. They appeared on the verge of capturing the franchise’s first NBA championship before the Bucks rallied to win four straight games.

In many ways, the reaction to Milwaukee’s post proved that point. Even without the trophy, Phoenix’s Finals run continues to be one of the most talked-about moments involving the franchise around the league.

That’s what gives sports rivalries staying power. Championships are celebrated forever, while heartbreaking losses often linger just as long. Five years later, the 2021 NBA Finals are still being talked about — even if it’s in the form of a meme.
