PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns have made one thing clear this offseason: They believe in Miles Bridges far more than much of the basketball world does.

That perception was challenged this week when Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley included the Suns’ newest addition among the NBA’s most overrated players, arguing Phoenix paid a premium for a player whose production has not matched the level of investment.
The criticism wasn’t necessarily about Bridges’ talent, but rather about the price.

The Suns traded an unprotected future first-round pick — arguably the NBA’s most valuable trade asset — for the 28-year-old forward, who has never been an All-Star and is entering the final season of his contract. The organization also hopes to sign Bridges to a long-term extension, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, signaling it views him as more than a short-term addition.
Buckley questioned whether Bridges’ overall impact justifies that level of commitment, arguing his profile resembles that of an average starter more than a franchise-changing player. While Bridges has developed into a reliable scorer, critics continue to question the consistency of his outside shooting, playmaking and defense.
That difference in evaluation is why the trade has generated so much debate.

The trade was already polarizing, with many in the Suns’ fan base uneasy about Bridges’ arrival because of his off-court history. Now, even his on-court production is being scrutinized. It raises broader questions about whether Bridges can fit the Suns’ culture and identity while elevating a roster looking to return to playoff contention.
That disconnect between the organization’s perception and the broader league perception will be one of the defining storylines to watch this season.

If Bridges exceeds expectations, the trade could be viewed as a gamble that paid off. If his production mirrors what critics expect, questions about giving up an unprotected first-round pick will only grow louder.
The Suns clearly believe Bridges can provide more value than many outsiders expect. Whether that belief proves justified will be seen over the course of the season.
