After annihilating SMU 38-10 on Saturday, No. 6 Penn State advanced in the College Football Playoff and will go up against Boise State at the 2024 Vrbo Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Eve. Penn State finished No. 2 behind Oregon by going 8-1 in the Big 10, with the Ducks at 9-0.
A battle of two schools with rich history in the Fiesta Bowl, one program’s zero must go. Penn State is 7-0 and Boise State is 3-0 in the highly acclaimed game, with Oklahoma State (3-0) the only other undefeated program with at least three appearances in the Fiesta Bowl.
The Nittany Lions have the most Fiesta Bowl victories out of any school in the country. Penn State’s last victory in Glendale came in 2017 when it won 35-28 over Washington.
For Boise State, the Broncos have won all three Fiesta Bowl matchups they have competed in, defeating Arizona (2014), TCU (2010) and Oklahoma (2007).
With this being the first-ever College Football Playoff Quarterfinal since the format expanded to 12 teams, Fiesta Sports Foundation Executive Director & CEO Erik Moses is looking forward to this matchup.
“In the historic first-ever CFP Quarterfinal, it is fitting that we have two schools in Boise State and Penn State that have rich histories and have never lost in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl,” Moses said via the Fiesta Bowl website. “We are excited to host and kick off the next step in this year’s playoff journey with two teams that are responsible for some of the most memorable games in college football history at the Fiesta Bowl.
“These are complete football teams with passionate fan bases. College football fans are in for a New Year’s Eve treat in the next step on the road to the CFP National Championship featuring two highly motivated, tough teams competing for a spot in the College Football Playoff Semifinals.”
Returning to the Valley, Boise State and Penn State will go head-to-head at State Farm Stadium, home of the National Football League’s Arizona Cardinals, in Glendale at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 31.
