What a Ring this year would mean to Kevin Durant’s Legacy

Kevin Durant is one of the greatest players in NBA history. He is already a member of the NBA’s 75th anniversary team. A four-time scoring champion, 2013-14 Most Valuable Player, 13-time all-star, and been selected to 10 All-NBA teams. To go along with two championships and two finals MVP awards.

He has a resume that is better than 99% of the players who have played in the league. So, his legacy should be set, right? That is not the case because with great talent comes great expectations. Durant has had very high expectations throughout his entire career. The only time his team has lived up to those expectations is when he was playing with the Golden State Warriors.

The Complicated Part

Before the 2016-17 season, Durant joined the Warriors as a free agent. The season before Golden State went 73-9. They lost in the NBA Finals to the Cleveland Cavaliers. In an epic seven game series. So, when a team that breaks the record for regular season wins adds Kevin Durant. They are expected to win the championship, easily.

That’s what they did, back to back championships. Kevin Durant won finals MVP both seasons but the team was already great before him and has won a championship after him. Durant looks like he was “The Ultimate Luxury” which Warriors head coach, Steve Kerr, once called him.

This makes it very hard to rank Durant all-time. He has a top ten all-time resume but not many fans, experts, or pundits have him on their top ten all-time list.

Winning Cures All

Winning a championship will make it much easier to rank him. Durant will have his third ring and possibly his third finals MVP. This will put him in very elite company. The only players in NBA history with at least three finals MVPs are Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, and Tim Duncan.

All of those players are on all serious top ten all-time list. Durant would have his ring outside of Golden State and join a very unique list. It would be very hard to keep him out of the top ten if the Phoenix Suns win their first championship.
