Life After Chris Paul

For the last three seasons, Chris Paul, has run the show for the Phoenix Suns. Paul is known as the “Point God” due to his ability to run an offense to perfection. He has an uncanny ability to know exactly when to shoot. When to pass and how to pass to his teammates. In his three seasons here, Paul averaged 9.5 assists and only 2.2 turnovers per game.

How will the Suns replace the play-making ability of the Point God?

New Chapter in the Book

Devin Booker will take on more of a play-maker role this upcoming season. He has shown the ability to be the primary play-maker throughout his career. Last season in 14 games without Chris Paul, Booker averaged 29.3 points, 6.5 assists, 5.4 rebounds and only 2.2 turnovers per game.

The long time Phoenix Sun had one of the best all-around performances of his career in a game that Chris Paul missed.

On February 24, 2022, against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Booker had 25 points, 12 assists, and six steals. Suns’ fans should not expect 10 plus assists per game but eight assists per game from Booker this season is very realistic.

Secondary Play-Making

Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal will also have the responsibility of getting others involved. The attention that Durant and Beal attract because of their scoring ability will help with that. Durant has shown the ability to be an efficient play-maker in his career.

When he was playing with the Golden State Warriors, he averaged 5.4 assists per game. Durant can replicate that production with the scoring ability that surrounds him on this roster.

Beal has not been known as a great play-maker throughout his career but he does have the ability. He averaged over 6 assists per game twice in his career. Beal most likely won’t average six assists as Booker and Durant will have the ball more but the ability to run the offense through Beal is available.

Replacing the play-making and offensive orchestrating of Chris Paul will not be easy but can be done with the plethora of play-makers on the roster.
