WATCH/READ: Sac St RB Transfer Cameron Skattebo Feeling “Comfortable” in ASU Offense

Cameron Skattebo emerged as potentially ASU’s top running back after a strong spring, which was capped off by a big spring game.

Skattebo comes to the Sun Devils after transferring from FCS program Sacramento State. In his sophomore season last year for the Hornets, he was named the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year, helping the Hornets go 11-0 in the regular season and become the No. 2-ranked FCS team.

In 2022, Skattebo rushed for 1,382 yards and seven touchdowns. He scored six touchdowns the season prior.

The success of running the football was nothing new for the Skattebo, who many could label as a bruiser but has surprising speed as well. In his three seasons of high school football for Rio Linda High School in California, he helped them go 29-8 and finished his career with 6,192 rushing yards and 69 touchdowns.

Now, he gets the chance to prove himself in a Power 5 program in Arizona State, where he is in a deep running back room that features players such as Cal transfer DeCarlos Brooks and returning sophomore Tevin White. However, he feels no pressure battling for the lead back spot.

“I’ve always told the other guys, I’m in for success, whoever it is,” Skattebo said. “I’m not a very selfish guy. I don’t like being the star of the show. If I am, I am.”

Skattebo was my MVP of the spring game in April.

I wrote then: “Skattebo took the backfield next to last year’s starting quarterback Trenton Bourguet and impressed greatly for Team Maroon. Skattebo racked up big runs all game and scored what ended up being the game-winning touchdown. At 5-foot-10 and 222 pounds, he showed off his strength and speed, breaking tackles and bursting through seams almost every drive.”

With over 50 newcomers, Skattebo is understanding of the low expectations for the team, but is ready to prove people wrong.

“I see why people put us under the dirt and tell us we’re going to be 3-9,” he said. “I mean, at the end of the day it’s going to show on the football field of what we’re going to be, so I kind of try to avoid looking at those things and people putting us under telling us we’re not going to be very good. So, we’ll just see when we get on the field.”

Skattebo is confident that his new coaching staff, like coach Kenny Dillingham and offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin, will put him and his teammates in a position for success.

“I’m comfortable with coach Dillingham, coach Baldwin, they all do a great job of teaching these guys and teaching me what they want,” Skattebo said. “So, I’m pretty comfortable with what they want. Everything they want us to put in to be successful is going on the right path.”
