That is what makes the Cardinals’ decision to give center Hjalte Froholdt a two-year, $20 million extension so significant.

Froholdt is not the type of signing that dominates national headlines. But Arizona is paying for something arguably more valuable, which is certainty. The 30-year-old has started all 17 games in each of his three seasons with the Cardinals, establishing himself as the constant in a unit that has historically struggled to maintain continuity. His extension keeps him under contract through the 2028 season and ensures he will remain the starting center in 2026.

That matters because the center position is more than another spot on the offensive line. The center helps establish protections, communicate adjustments and create the foundation for the running game. When that player is consistently available, the entire offense benefits from knowing what it has in front of it. Froholdt’s reliability has already coincided with productive seasons from James Conner, who recorded his first two 1,000-yard campaigns as a Cardinal during Froholdt’s first two seasons in Arizona. The bigger takeaway is strategic. Arizona does not need every offensive-line decision to be a short-term fix. It needs a foundation.
Keeping Froholdt gives the Cardinals exactly that.
