PHOENIX – The situation surrounding Ketel Marte isn’t slowing down, and many are sharing their opinions, including former D-backs SP Curt Schilling. The former Diamondbacks ace and co-MVP of Arizona’s 2001 World Series team took to X and essentially challenged the public explanation surrounding Marte’s controversial absence from Fenway Park. Schilling argued that he did not believe the complete story had been revealed and suggested the situation could eventually become clearer.

That is a striking intervention, particularly because Schilling is not simply another former player. He is part of Diamondbacks history. Schilling insinuating that the story behind Marte’s situation isn’t what took place has to be taken with a grain of salt, as he has made controversial comments in the past. But his comments also highlight something bigger than whether Schilling is right. Marte’s credibility has become the central issue. The 32-year-old admitted Monday that he chose not to show up for Arizona’s Aug. 17 game in Boston and acknowledged that he failed manager Torey Lovullo by not communicating. He said physical pain and frustration played a role. The organization later placed him on the injured list with left-knee inflammation.

Still, explanations do not automatically restore trust. Marte was booed by Diamondbacks fans in his return against Philadelphia, an immediate reminder that accountability is measured differently by teammates, management and supporters. That reaction may ultimately matter more than Schilling’s opinion. The Diamondbacks don’t need Marte to win over every critic overnight; they need him to become dependable again. It will be accomplished through communication, availability and production over time.
