PHOENIX – For years, Ketel Marte has been one of the faces of the Arizona Diamondbacks and a fan favorite. After missing the team’s series in Boston, Marte returned to Arizona and was immediately placed under a microscope. Marte was met with split boos and cheers, but was taken aback when he heard some Arizona fans yell with animosity.

During his first media session, he was asked whether he had a message for Diamondbacks fans. His response was simple, with Marte shaking his head “no.” The crowd was essentially split between cheers and boos, creating a reception that reflected something more complicated than anger. Arizona fans clearly haven’t forgotten what happened, but some haven’t completely turned their backs on Marte, either. Marte later admitted he didn’t expect the boos to come down the way they did. Yet his most telling comment came afterward: “I’m never going to stop loving my fans, and that’s what I want them to understand.”

Ketel Marte addresses media after returning to D-backs’ lineup:

Marte appears to view the communication problems and language barrier surrounding the situation differently than some fans do. For supporters, however, perception matters. When a franchise player disappears during an important stretch of the season, explanations become just as important as performance. The good news for Marte is that baseball provides something few sports do, which is time to repair a relationship. If Marte provides consistent production, accountability, and moments that remind fans why they embraced him in the first place, it may be the beginning of the road back.
