PHOENIX — The recent controversy surrounding Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star Ketel Marte has left the baseball world, with a former Cardinals linebacker now weighing in.

Since Marte’s no-show at Fenway Park on Aug. 17, questions about trust, accountability and what happens inside a clubhouse when a star player’s actions leave teammates searching for answers have risen. Lorenzo Alexander, who played for the Cardinals for two seasons, offered a glimpse into that dynamic while discussing the realities of professional sports locker rooms with Wolf & Luke on Arizona Sports.
“We might be fighting,” Alexander said, while acknowledging that players-only meetings may have taken place. “I’m guessing and assuming they’ve had player-only meetings. They’re not always beneficial either.”

Marte was placed on the restricted list after failing to report to the team. He later met with manager Torey Lovullo and general manager Mike Hazen and was placed on the injured list with inflammation in his left knee.
That still didn’t fully answer why Marte didn’t show. Then, photos surfaced of him at a Scottsdale-area casino while Arizona was playing at home against the Cincinnati Reds. For Alexander, that type of situation can become a question of trust if a player is perceived as breaking an agreement with his teammates.
“Because now, in a way, when I give you my energy and I’m trying to win a championship, I may be a free agent,” he said. “All that stuff matters.”
“I’m out here fighting tooth and nail … and you looking at me like I’m Boo Boo the Fool.”

The stakes extend beyond the standings for players, as their careers, contracts and families are tied to winning.
“I’m out here fighting tooth and nail,” he said. “… I’m walking in here and you’re looking at me like I’m Boo-Boo the Fool.”
While Alexander was not speaking specifically about Marte or claiming knowledge of the Diamondbacks’ clubhouse, his comments provide context for what can happen when trust is tested inside a professional locker room.

The issue now goes beyond where Marte was or why he missed one game. It’s about how he addresses his teammates, how they respond and whether the clubhouse can move forward with the same level of trust needed to make a postseason run.
That conversation may ultimately determine how this story is remembered — and whether it becomes a distraction or a turning point for Arizona.
