PHOENIX — With MLB rosters expanding in the final stretch of the regular season, the Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated two players from the injured list while moving a pitcher who may already have played his final game in Sedona Red.

According to the team, outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and left-handed pitcher Blake Walston have been activated and moved off the injured list. Gurriel had been nursing multiple injuries this season, his latest being a strained right abductor, while Walston is coming back from ulnar collateral ligament surgery.
Right-hander Ryan Thompson was moved to the 60-day injured list, effectively ending his 2026 season.
Thompson, who had been a dependable part of Arizona’s bullpen since arriving to the Valley in 2023, enters free agency in 2027. This year, the veteran reliever appeared in 46 games, posting a 4-2 record with a 4.43 ERA and 1.57 WHIP across 40.2 innings.

The numbers aren’t as strong as his previous seasons, but the right-hander remained a frequent option out of the bullpen. His experience and ability to handle different situations made him a valuable go-to option among the pitching staff.
Meanwhile, Gurriel and Walston rejoin a roster that continues to battle for a postseason spot. After their 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies Monday night, the D-Backs are now half a game back of the final wild-card spot. They’ll need all hands on deck if they want to finish out the regular season and play in October.

With injured players returning and Thompson’s season officially over, the Diamondbacks will look to bounce back and even the series against Philadelphia while trying to regain lost ground in the postseason race.
