The first time these schools met was when Arizona State beat Grand Canyon 80-68 on Jan. 22, 1980, in Tempe. Both programs would not play for another 40 years until Dec. 13, 2020, when ASU was able to just get past GCU, 71-70 in Phoenix. A year later, Arizona State won 67-62 on Dec. 9, 2021.
“We are excited for the opportunity to play GCU at Footprint Center,” ASU Men’s Basketball coach Bobby Hurley said in a press release. “It will be an outstanding matchup for basketball fans in the Valley. I’ve got a ton of respect for the program that GCU has built. We are always looking to challenge ourselves with these types of games in the non-conference to get ready for conference play.”
As for the women, ASU is 3-1 vs. Grand Canyon. The Sun Devils won 83-30 on Dec. 4, 1992, 99-67 on Dec. 22, 1994, and 80-72 on Nov. 30, 2022. In the most recent matchup in Tempe, GCU did snap the losing skid against Arizona State with a 66-59 victory on Dec. 8, 2023.
“We are so excited to play in the Hall of Fame Series again this year at Footprint Center in November,” ASU Women’s Basketball coach Natasha Adair said in the release. “Being able to play where our own WNBA Phoenix Mercury play will be a wonderful experience for our student-athletes. Last year’s event was a top-notch experience, and we can’t wait to ‘Activate the Valley’ and have our friends and family cheering us on.”
Tickets for the Hall of Fame Series in Phoenix are on sale now, with the games to be played on Nov. 14. Details of the start times of each game and the broadcast information are not yet available at this time.
