According to the team, outfielder Jake McCarthy has been traded to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Josh Grosz. The move reflects Arizona’s strategy of adding pitching depth ahead of the upcoming season.

It also reflects the business side of baseball, as a fan favorite was moved.

McCarthy was drafted by the D-Backs in 2018 as the 39th overall pick, debuted in 2021, and became a staple in the outfield over the past five seasons. His defense and speed were his bread and butter, but injuries and inconsistent performance may have led to the decision to deal him.

In 2025, McCarthy hit .204 with four home runs, 20 RBIs, six stolen bases, and a .592 OPS.

With no remaining options on his contract, the Diamondbacks had to make a move rather than risk losing the outfielder for something of value in return.

The Snakes are looking toward the future and not waiting to address their needs. Grosz is young and has shown the ability to be shaped into an MLB-caliber talent.

During the 2025 season in the minors, Grosz posted a 4.67 ERA with 135 strikeouts, a 1.30 WHIP, and held hitters to a .233 batting average against him.

Arizona gains another pitcher while parting ways with someone who called the Valley home for five seasons. But in an already stacked and competitive National League West, tough decisions are sometimes unavoidable.
