It seemed like it was an off vibe from the start when in the first inning, third baseman Eugenio Suárez sailed a throw over first baseman Josh Naylor’s head. Routine ground ball, quick third out, keep starting pitcher Zac Gallen’s pitch count low. Unfortunately it wasn’t that easy, but luckily it didn’t lead to any runs scored.
Later in the fifth inning, shortstop Geraldo Perdomo had a chance to get out of the inning, instead of sending it over to first, he tried to make the quick toss to second, but was too late.

Perdomo mentioned after the game:
“I went right away to (Lovullo) and told him it was my fault. I should have thrown to the right base. We’ve got to know who’s running. ‘PCA’ is a really great runner. He has a lot of speed. Like I said, I should have thrown to the right base.”
Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya, the very next hitter, sends a fly ball to center.. though Jake McCarthy can’t seem to bring it down in what seemed like a play he could have had to end the inning.

“I think the theme of the night was we made too many mistakes and they turned into stressors,” Lovullo said.
The Diamondbacks will look to clean it up for the rest of the opening series, as they look to shake the rust off and eliminate situations and errors that hurt themselves. Especially when the National League is this stacked, and with their schedule as tough as it is to start the season, correcting that as soon as possible will be key for Lovullo’s club going forward.
