Collins announced on social media that he would be entering the portal but is keeping ASU as an option to return.

Departures continue

The 22-year-old will join fellow guards Jamiya Neal, Braelon Green, and forward Akil Watson in the transfer portal all less than two weeks after ASU’s season concluded.

In addition, the team lost guard Jose Perez before the season officially ended. Forwards Alonzo Gaffney and Zane Meeks have also played their final games due to graduation.

After continuous discussions from fans and delays with negotiations, ASU and head coach Bobby Hurley officially agreed on an extension, meaning he will be back at the helm next season.

The longtime Sun Devils coach knows how important Name Image Likeness (NIL) is becoming when it comes to recruiting and keeping star players.

“Number one on the list is fundraising and convincing people to donate to NIL,” Hurley said in early January.

Significant loss

This would without a doubt be the biggest departure for Hurley and the Sun Devils from this past season.

Not only did Collins lead ASU with 13.8 points and 3.2 assists per game, but the guard was a nightmare for opponents defensively.

He averaged 2.6 steals per game and totaled 84 on the season, setting the all-time school record, which was previously 76. This impressive season earned Collins a spot on the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team and an Honorable Mention on the All-Conference Team.

Frankie Collins makes Arizona State history

As stated in his statement, Collins could still return to ASU. However, it would likely take a significant amount of promised NIL money to convince Collins to stay in the valley for his final collegiate season.

The Sun Devils are shaped up to potentially have an entirely new roster during their first season in the Big 12.
