According to MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert, one of the organization’s most intriguing trade chips is Jordan Lawlar, the former first-round pick whose strong start to the 2026 season has increased his value around the league. Lawlar has also become something of a utility player, having learned to play the outfield during the offseason to complement his infield work.

Gilbert reports that general manager Mike Hazen said he would be willing to trade top prospects, including Lawlar, if it meant improving Arizona’s roster. It wouldn’t be an easy decision to part ways with one of the club’s most highly regarded young players, but given the D-Backs’ status as contenders with clear roster needs, it may be more of a possibility than many expected.

After battling injuries during portions of his development, Lawlar appears to have found his footing in 2026. His defensive versatility and offensive contributions have shown why Arizona selected him with the sixth overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft and why he remains one of the organization’s most valuable young assets.

Before being placed on the injured list with a broken wrist, he hit for.333 with a .956 OPS through six games.

The challenge for Arizona is that its biggest needs do not necessarily align with its organizational strengths. The Diamondbacks are looking for power from the left side, hoping to acquire a first baseman or designated hitter, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. With starting pitcher Corbin Burnes now expected to be sidelined until September, addressing the rotation could become another priority for the club.

The Snakes enter the week at 34-31 and in second place in the National League West. Yet they remain in a familiar position — good enough to contend, but with roster shortcomings that could prevent them from keeping pace during the second half of the season. Those needs create a scenario in which Lawlar’s value could be used to address those holes.

Arizona already has considerable outfield depth, giving the front office some flexibility to pursue a deal from an area of strength. For a team trying to maximize its playoff chances while still competing in a crowded division race, moving a prospect of Lawlar’s caliber may be difficult to justify.

But if it helps address the Diamondbacks’ most pressing needs before the trade deadline, the risk may be worth it.
