Following an up-and-down 2023 season impacted by a quad injury, former Arizona Cardinals tight end Zach Ertz is heading to another destination.

According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, he confirmed that Ertz has signed a one-year contract with the Washington Commanders after rumblings came out about talks being held between the team and the player this morning.

“Three-time Pro Bowl TE Zach Ertz is signing with the Commanders on a one-year deal worth up to $5 million, per source,” Pelissero said.

Ertz was originally with the Philadelphia Eagles for nine seasons (2013-21) before arriving in Arizona via a trade on Oct. 15, 2021.

A Super Bowl LII Champion, Ertz was a Cardinal for three years (2021-23). He played 28 games while in the Valley, collected 130 receptions for 1,167 yards and scored eight touchdowns.

Last season during a 20-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 22, Ertz suffered a quad strain and left the game. Two days later, the 33-year-old was placed on Injured Reserve.

As weeks went by, the California native was eventually waived by Arizona on Nov. 30. He recorded 27 catches for 187 yards and posted a touchdown in seven games.

Ertz then signed to the Detroit Lions’ practice squad during the playoffs.

Not taking a snap in the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers, Ertz departed from Detroit and is now a Commander.

Ertz will get to reunite with former Cardinals head coach and Washington’s new offensive coordinator, Kliff Kingsbury. The duo previously worked together in the 2021-22 seasons.

Coming off of a serious injury, it will be interesting to see how Ertz will come back and fit into the Commanders’ system.

Does a trade for Chiefs’ L’Jarius Sneed make sense for Cardinals?
