What are the details of Carson Beck’s back injury?

The Arizona Cardinals don’t need Carson Beck to be their starting quarterback right now. They do, however, eventually need to find out what they have in him. That’s why Beck’s latest back injury matters more than a typical backup quarterback’s status. Beck, Arizona’s third-round draft pick, left practice on October 22nd after suffering a back injury, and appeared visibly frustrated as he walked off the field. The injury is separate from the issue Beck dealt with during the preseason, per Donnie Druin of Sports Illustrated, creating another obstacle during a rookie season that was always going to be about development.

With Jacoby Brissett entrenched as the starter, Arizona can afford to be cautious. There is little reason to rush Beck back and potentially turn a short-term problem into something that costs him valuable developmental time later, but patience also comes with a cost.

Every practice rep and potential game opportunity matters for a young quarterback, particularly one the Cardinals invested a Day 2 draft pick in. At some point, Arizona must determine whether Beck is simply developmental depth or someone capable of competing for a much larger role. Finding a legitimate quarterback on a third-round rookie contract could dramatically alter how Arizona builds its roster and allocates resources in future offseasons. For Cardinals fans, that makes Beck one of the roster’s most intriguing long-term questions, and why any injury right now could be viewed as a bigger setback than usual.
