PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks’ defense this season has earned recognition across the diamond, with four players named finalists for the 2026 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards.

Geraldo Perdomo, Gabriel Moreno, Corbin Carroll and Ildemaro Vargas were named finalists Wednesday, giving Arizona representation at shortstop, catcher, right field and utility. The recognition highlights the club’s defensive progress after the Diamondbacks finished with the second-fewest errors in the majors.
Perdomo anchored Arizona’s infield at shortstop, continuing to establish himself as a reliable defender at one of baseball’s most demanding positions. He ranked second in the National League with eight defensive runs saved and 16 outs above average, while recording a fielding run value of 13.

Moreno continued to strengthen his reputation as one of baseball’s better defensive catchers. He led National League catchers with 14 defensive runs saved and recorded a fielding run value of nine. His work behind the plate, including pitch framing, blocking and controlling the running game, made him a key part of Arizona’s defensive success.
Carroll earned his second consecutive finalist selection in right field. Despite dealing with injuries during the season, he recorded 12 defensive runs saved and 10 outs above average. His speed and range let him cover significant ground, helping the D-Backs limit extra-base hits.

Vargas rounded out the group with his first finalist selection in the utility category. His versatility across the diamond gave Arizona flexibility throughout the season, allowing the club to move him between positions while maintaining its defensive standard.
The four finalists highlight how Arizona’s defensive improvement extended beyond one position. Moreno provided stability behind the plate, Perdomo helped anchor the infield, Carroll covered ground in the outfield, and Vargas offered flexibility across the diamond.

Those contributions go beyond individual recognition. By limiting extra-base hits, making difficult plays and preventing opponents from extending innings, Arizona’s defense helped keep the team competitive all season.
While producing runs remains essential, preventing them can be just as important to winning games.
