The College Football Playoffs are expanding to 12 teams next season, and the Fiesta Bowl is set to play a pivotal role in the new format. Get ready for more thrilling games, more nail-biting finishes, and more implications on the line than ever before.

The latest edition of the playoff field involves the six highest-ranked conference champions. For whoever wins these conferences, they will receive automatic bids into the postseason.

To claim a bye to the quarterfinals, a college would have to finish in the top four in the nation. The six highest-ranked teams left will fill out the remaining slots in the 12-team format.

During today’s Arizona Milk Producer’s Fiesta Bowl Youth Football Clinic, Fiesta Bowl CEO Erik Moses talked about various things, but mentioned the reshaped CFP format.

Changes for the Better

When asked about what the Fiesta Bowl organization and himself are thrilled about with this change, Moses stated that this will bring a new meaning to the game.

“We are excited for the expansion of playoff format for college football from four teams to 12 teams,” Moses said. “We will be the first-ever quarterfinal in CFP history on Dec. 31 this year. I am looking forward to that and seeing how does the marketplace and college football fans feel about having a real tournament now.”

Because of these alterations, Moses explained that it will enhance the engagement and excitement of the playoffs.

“It’s not just two semifinal games and the National Championship game, we’re going to have first-round games, quarterfinals, semifinals and the National Championship,” Moses said. “While it’s not 68 teams like the NCAA basketball tournament [March Madness], it is really a tournament that allows us to have every game be a game of consequence in pursuit of a National Championship. We think that it is going to bring a different energy to the postseason.”

At the 2024 Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, Oregon beat Liberty 45-6 on New Year’s Day.

As we usher in this new era of college football, one thing is certain: every game will be a game of consequence in pursuit of a National Championship. So, are you ready for the new energy in the postseason?
