Way Too Early NBA Power Rankings

Top 10 Teams in the NBA

Tier 1

1. Denver Nuggets

The defending champions are bringing back most of their roster from last season. The two-time Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic is still in his prime. It will be hard to knock this team off of the throne.

2. Milwaukee Bucks

The Bucks were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs last season. Two-time MVP Giannis Antetokoumpo was injured during that series. They had the best record in the NBA during the regular season and went into the playoffs as the title favorites. The core of the roster is still intact from last year.

3. Boston Celtics

Boston made it to the eastern conference finals last season. In the off-season they added Kristaps Porzingis to the roster via trade. This addition may make an already great defensive team, even better on that end of the floor.

4. Phoenix Suns

The Suns got eliminated in the second round of the playoffs last season. This was after making the huge trade to add Kevin Durant to the roster. The team had very little time to gel as Durant only played eight games in the regular season. This off-season they added Bradley Beal. The big three of Beal, Durant, and Devin Booker has this team at the fourth spot in the power rankings.

5. Los Angeles Lakers

Last season this team went through a major transition. The roster was overhauled before the trade deadline. Now with a full season to work together. The west conference finalist from last season may be even more dangerous this year.

Tier 2

6. Miami Heat

The Heat made it to the NBA Finals last season as an eight seed but the off-season has not been great for them. Right now, they are in the sixth spot after losing their starting point guard, Gabe Vincent to the Lakers. Sharpshooter Max Strus also moved on after signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Heat have been tied in rumors to Portland Trailblazer guard Damian Lillard, all off-season. If they are able to acquire Lillard, they will move up the power rankings.

7. Golden State Warriors

Golden State lost in the second round of the playoffs to the Lakers last season. In the off-season they made the bold move of trading Jordan Poole to the Washington Wizards for Chris Paul. It is going to be very interesting to see how the Warriors use Paul. One of the greatest point guards of all-time in the same back-court with the greatest shooter of all-time, Steph Curry. It is hard to imagine that combination not working well together.

8. Los Angeles Clippers

Last season the Clippers had the fifth best record in the western conference. This is with Ivica Zubac and Marcus Morris being the only two starters to play more than 60 games. If the Clippers’ star players, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George can stay healthy, Los Angeles will be a title contender.

9. Sacramento Kings

Last season the Kings made it to the playoffs for the first time since the 2005-06 season. The roster is intact from last season. They were the third seed in the western conference. De’Aaron Fox and Damontas Sabonis were both all-stars last season. Their connection could be even better this year as they continue to build in head coach, Mike Brown’s system.

10. Memphis Grizzlies

Memphis was the second seed in the western conference last season. They were eliminated in the first round as they dealt with injuries to starting center, Steven Adams and back-up center, Brandon Clarke. Ja Morant will miss the first 25 games as he serves a suspension. Once Morant comes back, the roster will be one of the deepest in the NBA after the addition of Marcus Smart and Derrick Rose.

Honorable Mention

The Philadelphia 76ers have one of the best rosters in the NBA but there is a very public reason to be worried about this team. Their star point guard James Harden, does not want to be on the team. General Manager Daryl Morey has stopped all trade talks. This standoff between Harden and Morey may cause a riff in team chemistry.

Do you agree with the rankings? If not, what teams do you have in your top ten heading into the season.
