The Washington Nationals will call a former Diamondbacks minor leaguer, with infielder Andrés Chaparro set to make his major league debut according to Andrew Golden of the Washington Post. After spending eight seasons in the New York Yankees system Chaparro signed a minor league deal with Arizona. On July 30, he was traded to the Nationals for reliever Dylan Floro.

Adjusting his output relative to the league, FanGraphs graded his offense to be 38% better than the league-average player with a 138 wRC+. For context, catching prospect Adrian Del Castillo was 5% better with a 143 mark. However, he had no chance of a big league opportunity at either corner infield spot with Christian Walker and Eugenio Suárez blocking him.
While Chaparro did well in his time in the Diamondbacks organization, the fact he was blocked made him a more appealing trade chip than future contributor in Arizona. That’s why they felt comfortable parting with him for a middle reliever/setup arm in Floro. In the Nationals’ system, with less established players at his position, there will be an opportunity for him to get evaluated. Two weeks ago, Washington started Juan Yepez and Trey Lipscomb at the corner infield spots against the Diamondbacks.
