“Home is where the heart is,” Matautia said with emojis of a bear and an arrow pointing down, indicating the popular U of A slogan “Bear Down.”
Before joining the Wildcats, the California native played three seasons (2021-23) at the University of New Mexico. He appeared in 24 games (20 starts) for the Lobos who went 2-6 in the Mountain West Conference and 4-8 overall.
Former ASU defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales was hired as New Mexico’s head coach in 2020 before being fired after an 11-32 record. He accepted an assistant coaching job at Arizona, one of the reasons Matuatia transferred there.
In December, Matautia declared that he was entering the transfer portal and committed to ASU. But just after a semester as a Sun Devil without playing a game, he re-entered the portal and joined the University of Arizona Wildcats.
Matautia, a former three-star recruit, has two more years of college eligibility left after redshirting his true freshman year. He will get to reunite with former Anaheim Servite High School teammates and Arizona’s stars, quarterback Noah Fifita and wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan.
With the departure of Matuatia, ASU is still projected to have plenty of offensive line depth. Sirri Kandiyeli, Joey Su’a, Cade Briggs, Max Iheanachor, Ben Coleman, Josh Atkins, Keona Peat, Makua Pule, Terrell Kim, Bram Walden, Sean Na’a, Kyle Scott, Leif Fautanu, Filiva’a Saluni, Semisi Tonga and Champ Westbrook make up the Sun Devils’ offensive line core.
