Rodriguez, who signed with the D-Backs ahead of the 2024 season, is pitching his best season in Sedona Red. While his first two years in the desert weren’t what the club envisioned when it signed him, Rodriguez’s bounce-back campaign in 2026 has become one of the most encouraging storylines of the season.

Coming off a phenomenal World Baseball Classic performance against some of baseball’s best, the Arizona southpaw spent the offseason preparing, even shedding weight in the process. That work has completely changed the trajectory of his career with the Diamondbacks, turning him into the unsung ace of the starting rotation.

So far this season, Rodriguez has posted the club’s lowest ERA among starters at 2.21, which ranks fifth in MLB. He finished June with a 2.02 ERA across 35.2 innings, capping the month by striking out just one while allowing one run through seven innings against the San Francisco Giants on Monday.

Rather than overpowering hitters with velocity, Rodriguez has relied on deception, command and painting the corners. That approach has made him one of the National League’s most effective starters, and his teammates and manager believe it’s worthy of an All-Star nod in Philadelphia.

“He deserves the season he’s been having so far,” teammate Geraldo Perdomo said. “He’s a great human being. The way he handled everything here in the clubhouse is amazing, and I’m happy for him. … That’s why he gets paid. He gets paid a lot of millions to be the same guy. Do the same [as] when he was in Boston and Detroit. So I’m pretty much happy for him.”

Manager Torey Lovullo also voiced his support for his starter, saying Rodriguez “had his vote.”

“We’ll see what happens. It’s out of our hands,” Lovullo said. “We vote, the fans vote and then Major League Baseball makes the decisions. But [Rodriguez] has done everything he possibly can to deserve very strong consideration in my eyes.”

Rodriguez’s All-Star candidacy represents more than individual recognition. After questions surrounded his first two seasons in Arizona, the veteran has rediscovered the form that made him one of baseball’s most dependable starters. His turnaround has helped stabilize a rotation that has dealt with inconsistency, giving the D-Backs a reliable arm every fifth day as they continue their push through the season.

Whether Rodriguez ultimately earns a roster spot or not, his first half has already been a major win for Arizona.

A pitcher who once looked like a disappointing free-agent signing has re-established himself as one of the club’s most valuable players — something that could impact the club’s postseason chances just as much as the All-Star Game itself.
