Brooks has been named co-captain of Canada’s national team, alongside NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, ahead of the FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers.
Brooks has been one of the cornerstones of Canada’s rise on the international stage. He helped lead the program to its first-ever FIBA Basketball World Cup medal in 2023, earning Best Defensive Player honors while scoring 39 points in the bronze-medal victory over the United States.
He later represented Canada at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

During the tournament, the Phoenix forward averaged 14.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists while shooting 50% from the field.
Canada enters the upcoming qualifying window with a 4-0 record and will host Puerto Rico on July 3 and Jamaica on July 6 in Hamilton before another qualifier on Aug. 31 in Quebec City. The games are part of the nation’s path toward qualifying for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar.

Brooks’ appointment as co-captain is another sign of the veteran’s growing influence beyond the NBA. While his defensive intensity and vocal leadership have defined his game, serving as a national team captain highlights the respect he has earned from teammates and coaches alike.
With Brooks returning to the international stage and the Suns continuing to shape their roster this offseason, his experience leading one of the world’s top national programs could become another valuable asset for Phoenix entering next season.
