Diamondbacks fall to Padres 7-5

Despite attempting to mount a late-game comeback, a four-run deficit was too much for the Diamondbacks to overcome in their 7-5 loss to the Padres. San Diego took the series 3-1, and the Diamondbacks have now lost four of their last five.

Drey Jameson had his second poor outing of the season, allowing three runs in the first inning. The Padres then continued to keep the runs rolling in against the D-backs bullpen. San Diego put up one run off Anthony Misiewicz, two off Peter Soloman, and one more off Joe Mantiply in the .2 innings he threw.

It was not until José Ruiz and Kevin Ginkel came in to combine for two shutout innings that the Diamondbacks offense could get rolling without further damage. And unfortunately, it was too little, too late.

Matt Carpenter, the Padres newly acquired DH, had himself a monster afternoon. Carpenter had three hits in three at-bats, including two doubles, he drove in five of the Padres’ seven runs. This was his first three-hit game in a Padres uniform.

For the Diamondbacks, Corbin Carroll was alone with a multi-hit game. Carroll had a double and a single, scored a run, and stole yet another base. The rookie is now one of three players to have four or more home runs and five or more stolen bases early on this season.

The rest of the damage from Arizona’s offense came mostly from solo homers. Jake McCarthy, Nick Ahmed, and Alek Thomas all had their fun with some bombs, however, with no runners on the basepaths, the solo shots were not enough to get the job done.

This bump in the road has the D-backs now tied with the Dodgers for first place in the NL West with a 12-11 record. Arizona will now face the 5-17 Kansas City Royals to wrap up the homestand before heading on the road for five games. This series will begin on Monday, with the first pitch at 6:40.
