It all started when supporters noticed Marte had wiped his Instagram account of anything Diamondbacks-related and was no longer following the club’s account. The social media activity quickly fueled speculation that something was going on with the second baseman, with some even believing it had to do with a looming trade.

While neither Marte nor the organization has commented on the situation, widespread discussion among fans centered on the possibility that he could be heading out of the Valley.

Marte has been one of the franchise’s most beloved players since being acquired from the Seattle Mariners before the 2017 season. The switch-hitting second baseman has developed into the face of the D-Backs, earning multiple All-Star selections and playing a major role in the club’s 2023 National League pennant run.

The All-Star’s clutch postseason performances and laid-back personality have made him a fan favorite. Still, some have questioned his consistency during offensive slumps throughout his career.

This season, especially, has been a step back from the elite production Marte has delivered in recent years. Inconsistent production has prevented him from matching his MVP-caliber pace, leading some to wonder whether Arizona could capitalize on his value. He is currently batting .254 with 19 home runs, 61 RBIs and a .764 OPS.

Even if there were a possibility of a trade, it would not be so simple. As a player with 10-and-5 rights, Marte would have to approve any deal, giving him significant control over his future.

Trade speculation surrounding Marte is nothing new. His name has surfaced ahead of previous trade deadlines and during offseasons, especially when Arizona has hovered around playoff contention. Each time, however, the Snakes have held onto one of their cornerstones.

Whether the latest round of speculation is tied to an actual trade or simply social media activity remains to be seen.

But with the MLB trade deadline approaching and the Diamondbacks facing questions about their direction. For a fan base that has embraced him as the face of the organization, the rumors carry weight regardless of whether a deal is ultimately made.
