PHOENIX — With the regular season on the horizon, the Phoenix Suns keep making roster changes as reports indicate the club plans to waive two-way guard Koby Brea.

Brea, a second-round pick out of Kentucky, made a name for himself in college with his elite shooting, making him an intriguing option for Phoenix. In 12 games last season, he shot 43.3% from 3-point range while splitting time between the Suns and their G League affiliate, the Valley Suns.

However, Brea struggled to find that same touch during this year’s NBA Summer League and preseason, shooting just 11-for-38 (28.9%) from beyond the arc.

According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the move will give Phoenix a chance to look for more frontcourt depth with center Mark Williams sidelined by an injury to start the season. With Williams out, the Suns have a more immediate need to address their frontcourt and make sure they have enough size to handle the early part of the season.

Phoenix has already made several moves to shape its roster, including picking up Ryan Dunn’s option, extending Oso Ighodaro and keeping Duop Reath on a two-way contract. Now, the focus appears to be on finding another big man who can help take some of the pressure off the remaining interior players while Williams is out.

Two-way contracts give teams flexibility to add depth without committing to a standard roster spot, making that market a logical place for the Suns to explore. It’s a practical way to address a need without making a bigger roster commitment this early in the season.

Moving on from Brea could mean giving up a promising perimeter shooter, especially considering his 43.3% mark from 3-point range last season. Still, roster decisions often come down to what a team needs most now.

For Phoenix, that need is pretty clear. With Williams out, adding frontcourt depth takes priority, even if it means moving on from a young guard who showed promise from beyond the arc.
