SAN DIEGO – The Arizona Diamondbacks have officially been eliminated from postseason contention after their 7-4 loss tonight to the San Diego Padres.

After coming up just short in the 2023 World Series, the Arizona Diamondbacks ended last season missing the playoffs on a tiebreaker. Now the D-Backs find themselves in a similar situation, as they miss the 2025 MLB postseason with only two games to go with the Cincinnati Reds winning and the D-Backs losing on Friday night.

What is the main reason for the D-Backs missing the postseason in back-to-back years after their World Series run? The glaring issues surrounding the bullpen and all of the blown losses this season have come at the hands of D-Backs pitching coach Brian Kaplan’s mismanagement. The untimely Tommy John injuries to new starting pitcher Corbin Burnes and closers A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez have already hurt their postseason chances in the middle of the season.

The Diamondbacks now aim to finish their season strong, though it’ll be hard not to be disappointed with how the 2025 season ended, given how much talent and optimism the D-Backs had coming into the year. Questions will be raised about Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, his coaching staff, and certain free agents, though that will only come later. Now, Arizona can only grind out the next two matchups, work on getting better, and try to reflect on where this season went and how to grow from it.
