Gurriel Jr., who recently returned from an ACL injury, injured his left hamstring Friday night while sliding for a catch. While the club initially said he was removed with left hamstring tightness, he was set to undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury. Now, it appears he will miss time after being placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.

In a corresponding move, the Diamondbacks called up outfielder Tommy Troy — the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft.

While Gurriel Jr.’s injury is a tough blow for Arizona, both defensively and offensively, Troy has produced at the plate in Triple-A Reno. So far this season, the 24-year-old is batting .307 with 28 RBIs and an .846 OPS.

The moves come at an important time for the D-Backs as the club tries to remain above .500 and collect series wins. Gurriel Jr. has been a key veteran presence in the lineup since his return, providing power in the middle of the order.

Troy’s promotion also allows Arizona to evaluate one of the organization’s top young players against major league pitching. If he can carry over his production from Reno, he could provide a spark at the plate while adding depth to the Snakes’ outfield rotation.
