PHOENIX — Tommy Troy’s major league debut Sunday will be the latest indication that the Arizona Diamondbacks are turning to youth earlier than expected.

Troy, a former first-round pick in the 2023 MLB draft, is set to become the third Diamondbacks prospect to make his MLB debut this season, continuing a trend that has defined Arizona’s year. Injuries and inconsistent production throughout the roster have forced the club to rely on younger players sooner than originally planned.

What was expected to be supplemental depth has now become essential.

The 24-year-old rookie joins Jose Fernandez and Ryan Waldschmidt as position players who did not make the original Opening Day roster but are now seeing valuable MLB playing time. The accelerated timeline has not been ideal for the D-Backs, who have faced difficult roster decisions throughout the season.

The Snakes have spent recent years developing a pipeline built around athleticism and defensive versatility. The expectation was that many of those prospects would eventually become part of Arizona’s core. Few expected it would happen this quickly.

Troy’s promotion represents both necessity and opportunity. Younger players have provided fresh energy and roster flexibility at a time when the team has needed both. The rookie also posted strong numbers in the minors, hitting .307 with 28 RBIs and an .846 OPS.

The organization’s willingness to trust its prospects reflects confidence in the developmental system it spent years building. Much like Corbin Carroll and Geraldo Perdomo were once viewed as the future of the franchise before becoming staples of the lineup, Troy and the rest of Arizona’s rookie class could evolve from promising prospects into important pieces of the Diamondbacks’ core.

Now, as Arizona continues to battle injuries, the club’s next wave of talent is no longer waiting for its opportunity — it is already here.
