PHOENIX – The Phoenix Suns (31-22) are trying to end their two-game skid from snowballing before the All-Star break vs. the Dallas Mavericks (19-33). Phoenix and Dallas are both coming off a rare two days of rest heading into Tuesday’s matchup with each team facing some turbulence. The Suns are 4-5 in last nine games, while the Mavericks are currently on a seven-game losing streak.

The two sides faced off once earlier in the season on Nov. 12th, which rosters surprisingly similar to today’s despite the trades. Phoenix left that matchup winners, 123-114, thanks to Devin Booker’s 26 points and Grayson Allen’s 23 points. Dallas had six players in double figures, but it didn’t matter in the home loss.
Things will look to be different in Mortgage Matchup Center on Tuesday, as Allen will be out. The 30-year-old shooting guard will be re-evaluated after the NBA All-Star break, and his absence has already been felt. In the past nine days, the Suns have had two of their five worst shooting performances from the field and beyond the arc. Allen is a 17 point per game scorer that shoots 36.9% from 3 on 9.1 attempts per game, that is insane value that the team is missing.
A positive is that Jalen Green has returned to the lineup and can take up the load of making up Allen’s point. The 24-year-old doesn’t have the volume and efficient as his teammate, but his slashing and playmaking can more up the difference.

Switching to the Mavericks side, outside of the trades, the rise of rookie sensation Cooper Flagg is truly the biggest upgrade from the team’s last matchup. In his first 12 career games, the first overall pick averaged 15.1 points on 42.1% from the field. Since that Suns game, Flagg recorded 22.0 points per game on 50.1% shooting, including 33.0 points in his last five games.
Flagg has become a star in short order and will be a tough matchup for a Phoenix roster that is lacking at the wing position. The 19-year-old is 6’9 and knowns how to draw contact and bully his way to the rim. His dominance is a big part of why Dallas is top 10 in free throw attempts per game.
The best option for head coach Jordan Ott is to have Dillon Brooks try to disrupt the rookie and make him a rough day at the office. Ryan Dunn would be another great shout to get some extended minutes for defensive purposes to slow down Flagg.

Outside of Flagg, the Mavericks struggle offensively because of their lack of shooting, being bottom four in three points made, attempted and percentage. Guards like Max Christie, Ryan Nembhard and Klay Thompson are above average 3-point shooters and likely the only problems facing the Suns from defending beyond the arc.
The poor shooting has stopped them from being sixth in bench scoring with 41.3 per game. Thompson carries a massive part of that with 11.6 points per game, but guard Brandon Williams has been sensational for head coach Jason Kidd and his staff. The 26-year-old is averaging 12.7 points per game and is one of the few true point guards on the roster.
The shortcomings Dallas has on offense is almost subsided because of the power defensively. Nine players on the roster are above 6’6 and have the length to cause havoc for Phoenix ball handlers. Naji Marshall and P.J. Washington have carried the load on the perimeter, while the anchor of Daniel Gafford excels in his rim protection role. Despite being the seventh-worst team record wise, the Mavericks are 12th in defensive rating and seventh in blocks.

Booker and Green returning from injury has minimized their production recently, which has been slightly fixed because of the dominance of Brooks. Regardless of the contributions, it hasn’t been enough to win games and against a good defensive team like Dallas, none of it will be easy for Phoenix.
Ott discussed postgame following the loss to the Philadelphia 76ers about how the shot diet needs to better. While the Suns were getting wide-open looks, the first-year head coach wants his team to be a more drive-heavy team. Will he be able to achieve that goal against a lengthy Mavericks? Only time will tell.
