PHOENIX — Nolan Arenado’s move to the Arizona Diamondbacks drew a variety of reactions across baseball, including from a former teammate with the St. Louis Cardinals.

MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert appeared on the Bickley and Marotta show on Wednesday to discuss the trade, but also to reveal an interesting text he received from former Diamondbacks cornerstone Paul Goldschmidt.
“I got a text from Paul Goldschmidt who said, ‘Nolan Arenado is a good one,’” Gilbert said on the show. “‘You’re gonna like him, he’s gonna play well for the Diamondbacks.’ That’s a pretty good testimonial there.”

While many Arizona fans may have already known Arenado’s talent throughout his MLB journey, having someone with ties to the organization give him his flowers showcases what’s to come in the desert.
Arenado is a 13-season veteran in the major leagues, winning 10 Gold Gloves and earning eight All-Star selections during his time with the Cardinals and the Colorado Rockies. If anyone knows how well he’ll fit in with this young D-backs core, it’s Goldschmidt.

Teammates for four seasons in St. Louis, both players became staples of an era for the team and were able to make the postseason in 2021. The question now is whether we’ll see that in the desert.
That remains to be seen, as Gilbert also stated that the text didn’t reveal whether or not he wanted to re-sign with the organization.

“Certainly if he wants to play one more year, and have him in Arizona to capstone his career, I think it would be a great thing,” he said. “I think the fans would really appreciate it too. And he seems to fit what they’re looking for as a right-handed bat.”
Fans have definitely chimed in online about a possible reunion with the former Diamondback, hoping to fill a first-base position while bringing back a Valley icon for the 2026 season.
Next, the Dbacks should reunite Arenado with his former Cardinal teammate and of course all-time Dback legend, Paul Goldschmidt, and finally lock down a RP or two, and the Dbacks actually had decent off-season on paper.

While there haven’t been reports of the Diamondbacks reaching out to Goldschmidt about a possible reunion, the offseason has shown that anything is possible — and it’s never a definitive no.
