PHOENIX – It seemed like the Phoenix Suns were reintroducing themselves in their 118-96 win over the Utah Jazz on Friday night. In a season where chemistry and consistency have been some of the main storylines, Phoenix’s win offered something deeper. It offered a glimpse of what this team can be when defense and discipline take center stage.

From the opening tip, the Suns dictated the game through their defensive effort, which has been lacking this season, to say the least. Utah struggled from the field in the first half and only scored 40 points, which was a byproduct of aggressive closeouts and smart help rotations. For the first time in weeks, Phoenix’s defense looked intentional and looked bought in.

Then came the other key, which was control. After a sloppy start to the season, plagued by turnovers and rushed possessions, the Suns slowed the tempo. They finished with just twelve turnovers, which was still a step up from what was occurring at the beginning of the season. Every possession mattered, and for once, the Suns looked comfortable playing within structure instead of forcing highlights. The Suns’ star shooting guard Devin Booker took matters into his own hands as well, as he led the team with 36 points and nine assists.

For fans, this wasn’t just a win; it was reassurance. The Suns showed that when they lock in defensively and value each possession, they’re more than a star-driven experiment, they’re a threat. Even without their other two stars, Dillon Brooks and Jalen Green, the Suns fought their way to a much-needed victory. Phoenix needs identity, and last night, defense and discipline reminded everyone where winning can truly start.
