GLENDALE – After the Arizona Cardinals attempted to work toward a contract extension with wide receiver Michael Wilson, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, a deal may not get done. This gives a realistic scenario where Wilson could be headed for free agency after the season.

Will Michael Wilson stay in Arizona after the 2026-27 NFL season?

That should be a major warning sign. Wilson’s value goes beyond his stat line. After showing significant growth last season, he emerged as a receiver capable of becoming an important part of the Cardinals’ offensive identity. At times, his development even made him look like the more reliable young option compared with Marvin Harrison Jr., who has yet to consistently establish himself as the franchise receiver many expected him to become. That creates an uncomfortable question for general manager Monti Ossenfort: Why would they risk losing Michael Wilson now?

The Cardinals already have uncertainty surrounding their long-term offensive core. Allowing another young contributor to reach free agency could force Arizona to pay considerably more later or watch him leave and attempt to replace his production through the draft or free agency. That is where the strategic importance of Wilson’s situation becomes clear. If Wilson delivers another breakout season, his asking price could rise dramatically. Every touchdown, contested catch, and productive stretch could strengthen his leverage. Arizona could eventually find itself negotiating against the open market rather than negotiating with a player it already knows.

For Ossenfort, this is about more than one contract. The Cardinals need tangible evidence that the current regime can identify talent, develop it and retain it. If Wilson becomes a productive NFL receiver elsewhere because Arizona couldn’t get a deal done, that decision could become another painful chapter in Ossenfort’s tenure. Wilson’s contract should be one of the Cardinals’ biggest storylines this season, because the consequences could extend well beyond 2026.
