Why is Ketel Marte out of the D-backs’ lineup for Phillies finale?

PHOENIX – The Diamondbacks are treating Ketel Marte’s latest absence as a calculated decision, not a warning sign. Marte was left out of Wednesday’s lineup after serving as Arizona’s designated hitter in each of the previous two games against Philadelphia.

Ketel Marte not starting for D-backs on Wednesday against Phillies:

General manager Mike Hazen said the day off was planned, particularly because Marte is still working his way back from knee inflammation. The D-backs cannot afford to rush one of their most important offensive players back simply because the calendar demands it. Arizona needs him capable of contributing consistently rather than forcing him into an everyday role before his body is ready.

The next step could come defensively. Manager Torey Lovullo indicated that Marte could return to second base during Arizona’s upcoming series against Houston, giving the club another indication of where he physically stands. But the physical recovery represents only one part of Marte’s comeback.

His unexplained absence from the team in Boston turned a routine injury story into a national talking point. When he returned Monday, Chase Field fans made their feelings unmistakable, booing Marte during introductions and his early opportunities at the plate. That reaction creates a different challenge for both player and organization.

Marte can eventually quiet the noise the easiest way athletes know how, which is through production. Rebuilding trust does take more than a few hits. It requires consistency, accountability, and availability. For Arizona, the objective is bigger than getting Marte back into the lineup. The Diamondbacks need their star healthy, productive and fully connected to the team if they expect to make a serious push. That makes every day of this comeback worth watching.
