The Diamondbacks wasted no time making a splash during the 2023-2024 offseason by acquiring Eugenio Suarez from the Seattle Mariners, less than a month after their World Series loss. However, since his arrival in Arizona, Suarez’s performance has been nothing short of disappointing.

Before joining the Diamondbacks, Suarez had four seasons with 30 or more home runs, including a remarkable 49-home run season with the Cincinnati Reds in 2019, which earned him a 15th place finish in MVP voting.

In 2023, Suarez played all 162 games. Despite leading the league with 214 strikeouts, he hit 22 home runs, drove in 96 runs, and recorded a .980 fielding percentage.

Yet, in 2024, Suarez is experiencing the worst season of his career. He has hit only five home runs, has a batting average of .200, and has struck out 74 times in 65 games.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Suarez is on the brink of losing his job in Arizona as the trade deadline approaches. Nightengale noted, “The Diamondbacks are willing to listen to offers for struggling third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who could soon lose his everyday job. Suarez has a $15 million club option the D-backs don’t intend to exercise.”

If the Diamondbacks trade Suarez this summer, they have several options to replace him at third base, including Blaze Alexander, Kevin Newman, or even Geraldo Perdomo, who is nearing his return from the IL. Of these, Newman has the most experience at the hot corner, having played the majority of the latter part of the 2023 season at third base for the Reds.

The MLB trade deadline is July 30th.
