Diamondbacks to honor Nick Ahmed, who will decline NL Championship ring

Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Nick Ahmed enters the dugout before their spring training game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Salt River Fields on Mar 23, 2023.

Nick Ahmed, released by the Diamondbacks in the final month of last season, will be honored by Arizona today as his current team, the Giants, whom he joined in February, visit Chase Field for the first time this year.

However, according to John Gambadoro at Arizona Sports, Ahmed will not receive a National League Championship ring, as he has declined to accept one. Currently on the injured list with a sprained left wrist, Ahmed recently began a rehab assignment in Sacramento. As a result, he will not be present when the D-backs honor him for his time in Arizona.

Ahmed played almost ten full seasons with the Diamondbacks, starting in 2014. Unfortunately for the veteran, he never experienced postseason baseball. In 2017, the only time Arizona reached the postseason while Ahmed was with them, he broke his wrist in August, which led to a stint on the IL and a rehab assignment with the Reno Aces, ultimately excluding him from the D-backs postseason roster.

In 2023, Ahmed found himself in a similar situation, except this time he was cut completely in the final month of the season. Once Ahmed was gone, the Diamondbacks, as a Wild Card team, went on a run to the World Series. Leading to Ahmed’s release in 2023 was his .212 batting average across 72 games. With the rise of Geraldo Perdomo and the acquisition of Jace Peterson at the trade deadline, Ahmed’s glove at shortstop was no longer needed for Arizona.

As expected, Ahmed was extremely emotional when speaking about his release.

So far with the Giants in 2024, Ahmed has posted a .236 batting average and a .564 OPS. The reliable veteran has only made three errors in 36 games; since he headed to the IL, Giants’ shortstops have made 10 errors.

In the Diamondbacks’ prior series with the Giants this season, held at Oracle Park, they split it two games apiece. The two NL West rivals now meet again starting on Monday night at 6:40 PM.
