On Tuesday, April 23rd, the Arizona Diamondbacks announced several roster changes, including the acquisition of infielder Sergio Alcantara from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for cash considerations. The 27-year-old has been assigned to Triple-A Reno.

Alcantara is familiar with the Diamondbacks organization, having started his career with them in rookie ball during the 2013 and 2016 seasons. He was also part of their 40-man roster on two occasions in 2022 and spent 34 games with the Reno Aces last year.

During his time in the major leagues with Arizona, Alcantara began the 2022 season playing various positions, including third base, shortstop, and occasionally serving as a pinch runner. He recorded a .189 batting average before being traded to the San Diego Padres in early May.

Later that year, he returned to the Diamondbacks before the trade deadline, finishing the season with a .220 batting average. Since then, Alcantara has been with the minor league systems of the Cubs, Pirates, and Diamondbacks, without making a major league appearance since 2022.

In addition to acquiring Alcantara, the Diamondbacks claimed left-handed pitcher Jose Jacques off waivers from the Boston Red Sox, who has also been assigned to Triple-A Reno. Jacques, drafted by the Pirates in the 33rd round of the 2018 draft, appeared in 23 games for Boston last year and one game this season, posting a 5.08 ERA across 28 innings of bullpen work.

Furthermore, the Diamondbacks officially released infielder Jace Peterson, who managed only one hit in 22 at-bats at the start of the season.
