Geraldo Perdomo set to begin rehab assignment at the complex

Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo is removed from the field after injuring his right knee.

Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo is set to begin his rehab assignment. Before Thursday’s loss to the New York Mets, manager Torey Lovullo told reporters, including Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro, that Perdomo will begin a rehab assignment at the complex. The plan is to have him DH on Friday and then play shortstop on Saturday.

There are no specifics on how many at-bats or how many innings he’ll play the field this weekend, but the process will be to ramp him up before moving him up to Triple-A Reno to play rehab games before getting activated to the major league roster.

Perdomo tore the meniscus in his right knee on April 3 against the New York Yankees. He underwent a meniscectomy to trim off the damaged tissue the following week, with a typical recovery time of six to eight weeks. Assuming the eight-week timetable, that likely puts Perdomo’s return around next week.

The Diamondbacks struggled at the shortstop position for the first couple of weeks following the injury, with Alexander’s glove taking him out of the lineup. Kevin Newman, a minor league signing in the offseason, took over the shortstop position and filled in admirably. He had a hot stretch from May 4-22, batting .388 with six doubles, a triple, three RBI, and 10 runs scored. Newman has cooled off recently, going 2-for-19 over his past six games.
