Before the Diamondbacks series opener against the Giants, manager Torey Lovullo gave health updates on injured players. Lovullo told reporters, including PHNX’s Jesse Friedman, that Zac Gallen (right hamstring) and Merrill Kelly (right shoulder) will begin their throwing programs Tuesday. Eduardo Rodríguez is continuing to progress in his throwing program, as he’s now out to 90 feet.

That is good news for a starting rotation that has dealt with more than its fair share of injuries. The Diamondbacks are missing their top three starters, with Gallen, Kelly, and Rodríguez currently on the injured list. Rodríguez has yet to throw a pitch for Arizona in 2024 due to a left lat strain and a setback in late April. Kelly is dealing with a teres major strain in his right shoulder that’s kept him out since April 20. Gallen was a recent addition to the list of injured starters when he strained his hamstring on May 30. In their absence, the team has had to rely on Brandon Pfaadt and Jordan Montgomery to hold this rotation together while taking what they can get from Ryne Nelson, Slade Cecconi, and Blake Walston.
In addition to the rotation, the Diamondbacks are getting healthier with their starting lineup and bullpen. Alek Thomas (left hamstring) is continuing with his running progression, with the possibility will progress to running the bases later this week. Geraldo Perdomo (right knee) will play seven innings at shortstop with the team’s complex league affiliate on Monday, then will join Triple-A Reno for a rehab assignment on Wednesday. That could potentially put him on track to be activated from the IL on June 11, when the Diamondbacks host the Los Angeles Angels at Chase Field.
Luis Frías (right shoulder) will make a rehab appearance with Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. He threw a scoreless inning with the complex league team on Saturday. Miguel Castro (right shoulder) will throw on flat ground on Tuesday.
