On Wednesday, April 17th, the Arizona Diamondbacks executed a series of roster moves, including the placement of LHP Eduardo Rodriguez on the 60-day IL.

Last week, Rodriguez’s throwing program was halted due to tightness in his left lat, now he will miss a couple more months. The Diamondbacks’ offseason acquisition has yet to step on the mound for them during the regular season.

In 2023, the lefty posted a 3.30 ERA with the Detroit Tigers. The 8-year veteran’s best season came in 2019 when he picked up 19 wins for the Boston Red Sox.

Additionally, the Diamondbacks made further moves on the pitching front, opting to send starting pitcher Tommy Henry and reliever Luis Frias to Triple-A Reno.

Tommy Henry, who initially earned a spot on the Diamondbacks’ opening day roster due to Rodriguez’s injury and Jordan Montgomery’s presence in Triple-A, struggled with a 6.87 ERA across four starts. His recent outing against the Cubs highlighted these early-season difficulties, allowing five runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings. While the Diamondbacks managed to secure a win in extras, Henry’s performance underscored the team’s need for a reliable fourth arm in the rotation.

Likewise, Luis Frias faced challenges against the Cubs, surrendering three earned runs without recording an out. In total this season, he has given up eight runs in 11 innings pitched.

To address these demotions, the Diamondbacks selected Logan Allen’s contract and recalled Justin Martinez from Triple-A Reno.

On one hand, Martinez, a hard-throwing right-hander, debuted in the major leagues last season, pitching 10 innings and allowing 14 earned runs. On the other hand, Allen has played for four different teams since 2018, including the Guardians, Padres, Orioles, and now the Diamondbacks.

Both pitchers are likely to contribute out of the bullpen for Arizona.

Filling Tommy Henry’s spot in the rotation will be Jordan Montgomery, slated to make his Diamondbacks debut this Friday against the San Francisco Giants.
