Max Melton is the true definition of learning from one’s mistakes and proving everyone wrong after overcoming them. Melton, a defensive back who was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round, received a lot of rookie backlash for not giving the best performance. This was due to several wide receivers getting past him—not from a lack of talent, but simply because he was learning in real time, gaining experience on the field during games last season through October. Two games that really highlighted his struggles were against the Los Angeles Chargers and the Miami Dolphins—Melton openly admitted these were the worst games of his first season.

However, Melton was able to turn things around as he took constructive criticism in stride and used it to his advantage to grow and get better.

Melton told ESPN:
“Shoot, getting beat is going to teach you, you know what I’m saying?
You can show people getting beat, but until it happens to you, that’s when you’re really going to correct it.”
Rolling into November, Melton began to play with more confidence, applying what he had learned and finally showing the field his true talent. Once he grasped the key factors of his position and understood his role, he was able to fully implement his skills and athleticism into the game. Now, Melton isn’t just learning on the field he is changing the game.
