Key quote from Dillingham in this:
“‘Okay, we have starters, great.’ That’s like the famous thing people always talk about. Who are on the field when the game matters the most? And those are the people we trust, that person may not start. They may not fit in the game plan to open in 11 personnel. We may start the game at 12. But our A receiver may be on the field when the game’s on the line because we trust them. Or we may have three different wide receivers on the field when the game’s on the line instead of the starter … Same thing on defense. It’s all about who you trust when the game’s on the line. (That’s) the most important thing to me, not who takes the field first.”
Important Takeaways/Notes
Here are some of my takeaways from this official depth chart:
- Injuries: QB Drew Pyne, DT Anthoine Cooper (would have started I think), DT C.J. Fite, S Montana Warren, WR Jordyn Tyson, OL Ben Coleman
- USC transfer Xavion Alford is not listed on this depth chart, as he awaits the ruling on his NCAA waiver
- 17 transfers listed as potential starters (ASU had 30 transfers)
- 11 true freshmen listed on depth chart (Dillingham said 3-8 could see the field)
- Elijhah Badger (listed as starting X) and Will Shaffer (listed as second-string LB) will miss the first half of Thursday’s game
- 50/50 spots:
- Slot WR: Gio Sanders or Melquan Stovall (has been this way all camp)
- LT: Isaia Glass or Bram Walden (Dillingham said it would be like this last week)
- RG: Joey Ramos or Cade Briggs (Briggs has filled in everywhere, so he could get significant reps at any OL position)
- CB: Demetrius Ford or Ed Woods (this was expected as well, both have been very impressive in a deep room)
- Very little surprises, but here’s some to me:
- Sophomore RB Kyson Brown listed as third running back (Thought it would be Jacobs or Hart)
- Joey Ramos’ spot is up for grabs with Cade Briggs (Dillingham did say 5-8 offensive linemen could take the field)
- Tristan Monday getting the starting nod (has been getting first-team reps in practice but this is big for the Saguaro High School product in his first season at ASU)
The game will kick off on Thursday at 7 p.m. MST and will be televised on Pac-12 Network.
