In 2002, yes 20 years ago, no that is not a typo; Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling won back to back pitcher of the month awards. It has not happened in Arizona since then, however this year, 2022; Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen do the same thing. Diamondbacks pitching has been on fire.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!July: Merrill Kelly
The Diamondbacks as a team had one of the hottest months in July. That was on the shoulders of ace pitcher Merrill Kelly. He was named July’s National League’s Pitcher of the Month. In July he pitched 6 games going 4-0, 1.31 ERA while throwing 33 strikeouts.
August: Zac Gallen
Early August came, and the Diamondbacks needed a lift. Almost like Super Man Zac Gallen stepped to the mound and started dominating. He threw at the time August ended 34.1 scoreless innings in a row, a streak that is still counting. (Also 2nd in Diamondbacks history behind Brandon Webb)
As he earned the August National League Pitcher of the Month award, he allowed this franchise to achieve something rare. Something the Diamondbacks pitching has not achieved since 2002 with Johnson/Schilling going back to back Pitcher of the Month award winners.
As Gallen stepped his game up, the team around him seemed to be unstoppable. Going on a win streak to end the month that got D-Backs faithful excited about a playoff run!
